Illustrator and you’re just getting started, this tutorial is a quick look at how to get there. Plus, even if you’re using a standalone graphics tablet, this tutorial is easy enough to follow.
The easiest method
If you are looking through online tutorials then surely you are looking for the easiest method to achieve the desired results. Of course! The method below is pretty much the simplest technique on how to underline text in illustrator:
Character table
Step 1: Okay, let’s set up a simple project in Illustrator, here we have a simple canvas with some simple text saying “Layerform”. How to make underlined text thicker
Okay, so you’ve just learned how to create underlined text in Illustrator, but how exactly do you make the underlined part thicker? Maybe it doesn’t look that good so you need to thicken the stroke… Unfortunately in Illustrator there isn’t (or to my knowledge) a way to explicitly thicken the stroke in the character palette. However, this is probably the workaround I would use: After you’ve underlined your text, what you want to do then is select your object, go to Object > Expand > Ok.Read more: how to keep cushions from bunchingFrom here all you need to do is double click on your newly expanded layer, this will take you one layer deeper in the group, you can tell by looking just below the toolbar, it will say Layer > Group. Next, just click on the “underline”, and drag it down to make it bigger, then reposition it if you have to. You should have something similar:
Final technique (fast)
Okay, this is a really cool tutorial and as such there is actually another way you can do it. If you don’t want to go into the character palette, you can simply draw a Line / Rectangle by pressing (for straight line) and M on the Keyboard for Rectangle. For some people, this is actually the simplest method, and you probably also get a little more creative control. So maybe try both ways and see which works for you.
