One way you can end a poem is by dialogue and/or the speaker’s voice. With this ending, the reader will have a closer experience. The situation is brought to life through a subject’s speech in the world of the poem and gives the piece a more intimate feel — which is what you want to happen in a poem. When writing, it’s important to actively think about how you can bring different feelings to your audience. The closer you can bring the reader to the poem, the more involved they will be in the work and the more invested they will be.Originally published in Platform Magazine (2020)

Alliteration magic

As you will learn from my other blog, 3 Tips for Starting a Poem, alliteration can be used in a number of different situations. By definition, alliteration is the use of the same letter with the same sound repeated throughout a section. This elevates the music in the poem and reads in a pleasing rhythm. Quote

Closing with a quote can be a great ending if done right. As long as it doesn’t feel forced or it’s not included for the sake of not being able to come up with your own ending, end your poem with a quote from another person (or famous poet). in my example.provided) can add a level of context that doesn’t exist otherwise. A safe way to assess whether you are using a quote appropriately is to ask yourself if the quote you used adds to the original poem or quote. Using a quote in your poem (especially if it’s old/archaic) can add new meaning to it depending on what your poem is about and/or when it takes place. For example, my poem Memo for Branch Brook Park as Whitman, which first appeared in Black Phone Magazine, calls on the Jersey writer to help explain the speaker’s experience, ending with: “Someday someday That I will develop. / One day I will be just as brilliant, / but now I am just blades of grass”, is a reference to Whitman’s book, Leaves of Grass.
