Why is there a windshield?

Contents

There are many reasons why your windshield is foggy including:

Humidity

Moisture causes accumulation in water and turns into steam. You breathe humid air. This air comes out from inside your body or from it. Windshield fog tends to cause more problems when there is more than one person in the vehicle because there is more breathing noise.

Heat

Temperature is essentially moving molecules. More moisture is held by warm air rather than cold. However, this is not a chemical reaction. Molecules do not hold water molecules. More water becomes a gas when it is warmer than a liquid. And, there is more space between each molecule with warm air, so water molecules can fit in this space.

Surface tension

Condensation

Warm, moist air condenses when it hits the cooler windshield of a car causing water vapor condensation. This usually happens early in the morning. This is also why on warm, humid days, when you run your car’s air conditioner, you’ll see water condensing at the base of the windshield, where it meets cool air. to find a way out of somewhere. On a cool morning it’s cool outside when there’s fog or dew on the ground, that’s because warm, moist air is in contact with the cold ground.

How to Dispel the Fog on Your Windshield

You can clear the fog in several ways. And while there’s no particular way to do it that works best every time, the two that are more likely to work better are as follows.

Dry the air out

Your best option is to run the air conditioner, depending on your comfort level. This method works well when the outside temperature is above freezing and human-induced humidity inside the vehicle causes fogging. While cold is best when running A/C, you can still run air at warmer temperatures and eliminate fog.

Evaporate water

This causes the steam to evaporate just like the moisture on your clothes evaporates when you turn on the tumble dryer. This method works better when the temperatures are colder and you’re getting foggy early on. Slowly increase the air temperature if you find the A/C too cold until you have dried the air inside the vehicle.

  • Set your defrost to a high setting.
  • Set the temperature to hot.
  • Turn off the cyclic setting.
  • Turn on the air-conditioner.
  • Crack your windows.

Remember that when you are drying the air inside your car, you need to draw in outdoor air instead of just circulating the air inside. Today, most defrosters already do this.
