In the house, my dog, Baby, has a hard plastic bucket bed. Her bedding is made with layers of blankets and rugs that I find at thrift stores. When it’s time to get ready for the night, she’ll toil or rummage through the blankets, circle around the bed a few times, and eventually curl up to sleep. Outdoors, at the end of each summer, there are at least two spots in the yard that she has converted into a small sleeping hole. Regardless of your dog’s size, breed, or age, most seem to perform one or more of these weird bedtime rituals. A patchy lawn is one thing, but it can be another when we discover holes in our furniture cushions or duvet covers or scratches in our hardwood floors. Like a police helicopter circling a crime scene, my dog circled the same spot repeatedly, then lay down. She does it for a similar reason: to establish a safety belt. Walking in circles creates enough commotion to startle any snakes or rats from their chosen sleeping area. While we know our home isn’t capable of hosting these types of guests, a thorough inspection doesn’t cost a dog.

We can’t see it or feel it, but when dogs come around and scratch at their beds, they’re really asserting a personal position for that particular spot.
