According to Wikipedia, Ibn Ismail ibn al-Razzaz Jazari (in Arabic: aka Al-Jazari) was an Arab Muslim scholar, inventor and mechanical engineer during the Golden Age of Islam (the Middle Ages). Although his birth and death dates vary according to most articles written about him, other details about his life and work are better known. Al-Jazari is not only known as the “father of robotics”, he also recorded 50 mechanical inventions (along with construction drawings) and is considered the “father of modern engineering”. Inventions he mentions in his book include crank mechanism, connecting rod, programmable automaton, humanoid robot, moving piston engine, suction tube, suction pump, pump double acting, valve, combination lock, cam, camshaft, segmented gear, first water and weight driven mechanical watch, and especially the crankshaft, considered an important mechanical invention most in history behind the wheel. Al-Jazari also noted some practical joke devices in his text. Some are donkey drinkers that appear to hold water but fail to empty.
