Betty Who

Australian singer/songwriter Betty Who has created hit pop hits reminiscent of divas like Whitney Houston, Robyn and Katy Perry. Borrowing sounds and styles from the ’80s on and putting their own funky stamp on them, the viral success Ai earned with early indie releases like 2013’s The Movement EP led to major label releases including The Valley 2017. By the time of Betty in 2019, she’s back to being an indie artist of varying strengths. Jessica Anne Newham was born in Sydney, she started playing the cello at the age of 4 and later studied piano and guitar. As a teenager, she and her parents moved to America so she could attend the Interlochen Center for the Arts School of Performing Arts. During this time, she began to write and perform her own songs. She then went to Berklee College of Music for further training as a cellist, but really wanted to focus on becoming a singer/songwriter. While in Berklee, Who met producer Peter Thomas, and the pair began writing and recording material together. Inspired by the songwriting skills of Joni Mitchell and Carole King as well as the epic synth pop of M83 and MGMT, they created an equally nostalgic and contemporary sound for songs like “Somebody Loves You.” , written shortly after Houston’s death. After its release in late 2012 as a free download, the single received online acclaim and was remixed by FM Attack. Self-released Who’s debut EP, The Movement, arrived in April 2013 and included “Somebody Loves You”, which topped Billboard’s Dance Club songs chart the following March. agreement with RCA Records, and Who launched the company with the EP Slow Dancing in April 2014. A more refined effort expanded Who’s brass style with R&B-inspired production and songwriting. More introspective, it peaked at number 57 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Albums Chart. That October, she followed it up with her debut album Take Me When You Go, which was produced by Thomas as well as Starsmith, Claude Kelly and Martin Johnson and peaked at number 68 on the Hot 100. In February 2015, ““ All of You” became Who’s second single to reach number one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. After spending most of 2015 she returned in June 2016 with a captivating cover of Donna Lewis’ 1996 single “I Love You Always Forever”, becoming the third number one of the year. on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and peaked at number six on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. She followed it up in November of that year with the tropical movie “Human Touch”. Who reunited with Thomas and also worked with producers including Pop & Oak, Mstr Rogers and Robopop on her second album, 2017’s The Valley, which reflects her move to LA with multiple styles and hits number 105 on the Billboard Hot 100 Albums chart. In late 2017, Who became an independent artist again when she left RCA Records. The following January, she released the single “Forget Me” and was followed by covers of Kylie Minogue’s “Come Into My World” and Widelife’s “All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)”, the following song. was used as the theme song for the second season of Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot. That June, Betty, Pt. 1 EP offers a preview of her third album.
