Kitten Suckling — Is It A Bad Thing?
About a week into our home kitten Norton’s life, we noticed that he was nursing on his own, using one of his own nipples. He would do it really focused, and at the same time tap his feet, snarling loudly. Having no experience with this, we took him to the vet, who reassured us that the behavior was nothing to worry about. Mother noted that the nipple is not inflamed or infected. Veterinarians say that kittens can outgrow this kitten’s suckling behavior, and that sometimes kitten sucking occurs when orphaned kittens are too young. The latter is something that bothers me, however, that I would like to learn more about. Will this kitten’s sucking behavior go away? Does it mean he is stressed or just satisfied? Cats can suckle your carpet, skin tags, ears, or fingers. Jamie Bluebell comes to us as a kitten and in a very short amount of time she will suckle a piece of skin on my husband’s armpit. She also likes to suck on the frames of his glasses. But Jamie got over it pretty quickly, and from what we know, we don’t think Jamie was orphaned as a kid like Norton was.
Why do kittens stop suckling?
Causes for kittens to quit sucking can include separating from the mother too soon. Ideally, kittens should not be weaned from their mothers earlier than six weeks. But according to the ASPCA online information, breastfeeding can also be a sign of stress, compulsive behavior, or even just happiness or contentment. It’s a hard behavior to shorten.

Is there anything you should do about nursing kittens?
My vet did not recommend any solutions. She sees no cause for concern in Norton’s case. For example, if your cat likes to suck on blankets, make sure the blanket isn’t rotten or has loose threads that the cat could swallow. cat while it is nursing is not a good solution. If the cat is nursing due to stress, this will only make them more stressed.

The site is not infected, as my vet pointed out, and we are monitoring that. Your baby’s feeding frequency gradually seems to decrease. And if we’re playing with Norton, or snuggling, breastfeeding doesn’t seem far off his mind. So I’ll wait it out, and see what happens. In my situation, I’m not worried. Norton seemed happy and not stressed or forced. In short – and the ASPCA article helpfully says this – if kitten sucking is affecting your cat’s quality of life, it’s time to seek help. If your cat is hurting their skin, or someone else’s skin, or seems to be suckling as a kind of stress response, seek help.
