How To Paint A Leather Jacket
Back when I got married in 2016, it seemed like the only person wearing a leather jacket on the wedding day was KimYe. I had a hard time finding an artist to draw for me, so I taught myself calligraphy (in less than a month, I wanted to develop my own hand-embroidery style, haha) and ended up drawing the first leather jacket for her wedding, and last. As they say, is history. Check out this page to learn the story of #TheJustMarriedJacket and how it became a worldwide project today ???? Fast to this day, every novice calligrapher seems to offer handwriting services on the skin. It’s becoming a trend (perhaps my own viral project is a bit to blame for that) and custom jackets are in extremely high demand. But how can you avoid a bad-written, horribly zigzag Pinterest failing? Either hire a professional (list of calligraphers who specialize in leather is at the bottom of this page) or read on for my full process and some answers to some Frequently Asked Questions… Read: how to paint one leather jacket Don’t want to DIY? I will do it for you! And yes, that’s the painting on very expensive coats!

A question I get asked a lot is “what paint do you use on your skin?” and I was, ironically, forced to answer with “leather paint”. It’s really simple! No need to look for hacks, there is a paint specially made for that ????The tools you may need to paint on your skin are:
- Leather paint – I use Angelus Flat White or Flat Black
- Round paint brush – I use whatever I put around, usually Winsor and Newton rings 00
- Dominator – you will need to measure and center your design.
- Stabilo Aquarello Grinder and Grinder – water soluble pencil. This magic tool can create all your tutorials; but use caution with leather or felt fabric as it can sometimes leave shadow lines on the porous surface. Always check for inconspicuous fabric inside the jacket. Get a sharpener handy to keep your pencils sharp! Sometimes a chalk pencil really works best (it blurs best on fabrics like denim).
- Wet tissue paper – A damp paper towel can clean the Stabilo Aquarellable, but again, check the pencil and remove it in a conspicuous spot inside the jacket.
- Throw pillow – Placing a flat coat is hard. It’s made to fit on a 3D body so it has darts that curl around and has sleeves and zippers that are hard to maneuver around. My solution was to stuff a throw pillow from my sofa into a zip-up jacket and paint it inside.
The process of painting leather jackets
- Copy and Concepts – reinforce what your copy is and figure out what kind of detail or design motif you will include. DO NOT copy someone else’s design. If you have a client who asks you to copy something, find a way that you can create your own design because plagiarism is not cute.
- Draft – I always create digital drafts for clients so I can figure out the scale, placement, and make sure they’re happy with the design before permanently ruining an expensive leather jacket! Would do a pencil sketch on some scratch paper, but I wanted to try to find a jacket on a model and create a draft on the Procreate App for iPad.
- Approve / change – (for client-based work only) If you are working with a client, take the time to approve/change. My price includes a round of revisions and I charge hourly for additional design time. Client disclaimer: design drafts are for approval purposes only and will not be identical when applied to jackets.
- Rule – Once you have an approved design, the location and scale are all decided, so you just have to replicate it! If you notice that Aquarellable leaves no noticeable marks on your skin, continue using it; or try chalk or pencil. Using a paper towel, I moistened the surface of the leather and the tip of the Aquarellable pencil and applied it gently to the jacket. I will use a ruler or ruler to mark the area of the design.
- Paint Like I mentioned above, I like to pull up my coat and put a throw pillow inside so I have a smooth surface to draw on. With the instructions on the jacket, I just painted the design on without diluting the paint. When paint starts to build up on the bristles, I simply wipe them off on a damp paper towel. Try to make a single thin layer and don’t over coat until dry. Follow up with at least two more coats of paint for a completely transparent look. Yes, it needs three layers.
- Photograph – I don’t wear any of the client’s coats to take pictures or take pictures. I see them as truly emotional subjects and I want them to be the first to rock them on their wedding day, engagement photo session, birthday or otherwise. I take pictures of every coat on a hanger or on a flat surface
