where to find tofu in grocery store
I have a secret… Want to hear it? I really like tofu. And honestly, I’ve loved it during the 13 years I’ve been vegan. So I ended up buying tofu from a lot of grocery stores over the years!Tofu can be found at most grocery stores, including large chain stores. It is also stocked at health food establishments and natural foods stores. Tofu is usually found on cold shelves at the edge of the production area. It can also be in the natural foods section or the Asian foods section.Reading: Where to Find Tofu in the Grocery Store Below, I’ll show a picture of the exact locations of tofu in Safeway, Wegman’s, and Meijer. I also show you what tofu packets look like. And I will share my favorite tofu recipes! But first… let’s see which stores even have tofu.
Which store has tofu?
Contents
Most grocery stores have tofu, including large chains and department stores like Walmart and Target. All health food stores, food companies, and natural foods stores should also have tofu. Tofu tends to be more commonly stocked than tempeh, seitan, and other meat substitutes. To be clear, I would expect to find tofu at all of the following major grocery stores:
- Kroger
- Safe way
- Whole Foods
- Name of the chain of stores Trader Joe’s
- Albertsons
- Publix
- HEB
- Meijer
- Wegman’s
- Vons
- Jewel-Osco
- Shaw’s
- Food lion
- Hannaford
- Giant food
- Hy-Vee
- Harris Teeter
- Smith’s
- Fred Meyer
- QFC
- And many more…
Also: Even discount grocers like Aldi should generally have tofu. (PETA has given Aldi an award for their vegetarian options, including their Sriracha Grilled Tofu!) So most grocers have tofu. But not all.
Tofu-free grocers
I wouldn’t expect any of the following stores to have tofu:
- The gas station
- Small convenience store
- Party shop
- Stores like Walgreens, CVS or Rite Aid
- Dollar stores (like Dollar Tree, Dollar General, or Family Dollar)
However, as plant-based eating becomes more and more popular, maybe even some of these stores will start selling tofu!
Where to find tofu in the grocery store
There are 4 places I would recommend in the grocery store to find tofu.
1. Refrigerator in Production Section
Look around the edges of the product section. Usually you will see sections of the wall chilled with fresh lettuce. Usually, there will be water sprayed on the greens from time to time. Tofu is usually kept in one of those wall-mounted refrigerators.Tofu in Safeway’s Farm In the photo above, the bagged vegetables are on the right, and the tofu and meatless options are on the left. This is very common — I’ll show more example images below. This is where there will be plenty of chilled (not frozen) meat-free options. This includes veggie sausages and salami, vegan cheese, vegan mayonnaise, Tofurky products like vegan deli slices, etc. You’ll often see different options for tofu firmness. . I will cover it in more detail below.
2. Refrigerator in the Natural Foods section
Check out the “Natural Foods” or “Healthy Living” section of the store. This is where you’ll find gluten-free aisles, vegan and vegetarian options, and organic foods. Most of the tofu at Wegman’s is refrigerated in the natural foods section. Also, you can see a large “No Meat & Tofu” portion in the refrigerator at Wegman’s. The tofu is right on top of the seitan in this case. (I have another post on where to find seitan.)
3. Refrigerator in Asia
Read more: Where is the kucoin transaction passwordI don’t have a picture of this — but I’ve seen it before. In Wegman’s, they actually have Refrigerator with tofu at the end of the international aisleThis refrigerator has kimchi, miso and other cold foods used in other Asian or international cuisines. Since tofu is so popular with Asian cuisines, of course they have tofu!
4. The “Meat Free” section of the freezer
To be honest, you are not likely to find normal packages of tofu in the freezer. But you can find frozen meals that contain tofu. Or at least you’ll find other vegan protein options like veggie burgers. Normally, this section of the freezer will be labeled “No meat.” Or it might say “Vegetarian.” Or maybe it will be an unlabelled freezer in the natural foods section of the store. Boca, Morningstar and Amy’s. Beyond Burgers can be here or in another section closer to real meat.
Where to Find Tofu in Meijer (Example)
Meijer is a large department store in the Midwestern United States. It’s similar to Walmart and Target: It has a grocery section—plus clothing, electronics, and everything else. In stores like this, there’s usually no “natural foods section” or anything. So tofu is almost always at the edge of the product. Here’s how it looks in Meijer:Here you can see the tofu on the bottom floor:Here’s how it’s set up at Target, Walmart, Safeway, and many other grocery stores. Whenever there’s no separate “natural” or “healthy” food section, this is where I’d expect to find tofu. produce parts like this.
Where to Find Tofu in Safeway (Example)
Safeway is another example of tofu in edge of the product section. Here’s what it looks like:
Where to Find Tofu in Wegman’s (Example)
Wegman’s grocery stores tend to be huge. So you can actually find tofu in many areas. Here are the 3 spots I found tofu at Wegman’s:1. In the refrigerator “No Meat & Tofu” in the natural foods section. It’s right next to the gluten-free aisle, near vitamin supplements and bulk food bins.2. In the refrigerator at the end of the international food aisle. With other Asian dishes like kimchi.3. In a refrigerator section next to the hummus. This is a pretty random spot for tofu—but I’ve seen it there in my Wegman’s.
What does a tofu package look like?
Tofu packages usually have a soft top with a plastic “carton” around the edges and bottom. You just need to peel off the top to open. Read more: Manu Raju CNN, Bio, Wiki, Age, Height, Wife, Salary and Net Worth Usually, tofu is packaged with added water. (You only need to pour water after opening.) Here are some common tofu brands you will see:Sometimes the tofu will just be wrapped and vacuumed around — no carton on the bottom.Other brands you might see: Soy Boy, House Foods, Morinaga (Mori-Nu) and Hodo. There are also store brands, such as the 365 Organic brand at Whole Foods Market. Usually, you will see many options at the store. So which one should you buy?Personally, I just buy firmer tofu. It works well if you want tofu blocks in a pasta or rice dish. And it’s also crumbly for tofu.Silken tofu is very soft. It can be used for things like smoothies, puddings or mousse. It can also be used in baking to replace eggs. (See more egg replacement tips in my post on vegan emulsifiers.) For most recipes that call for tofu, I’d recommend firmer tofu. But obviously it depends on the specific recipe.
Tofu recipes you should try
There are countless ways to prepare tofu — it’s so versatile. But usually, it will involve some sauce, marinade, or some other thing to add more flavor. As the tofu itself doesn’t have much flavor. My favorite way to eat tofu is uncle tofu. When I’m trying to gain muscle, I sometimes eat it daily (for protein!) There are tons of tofu recipes you can find online. The best tofu recipe for you will depend on your personal preferences. Since I’m a somewhat picky eater, I keep myself pretty simple. Here’s what I do:
- 14 to 16 ounces firm tofu (one full block)
- 2 or 3 tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- just a little bit of black pepper (it increases the benefits of turmeric)
- a handful of greens (I usually make arugula or spinach)
- optional: just a little cooking oil
- Mix well in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Let’s shuffle it at some point. Add greens at the end.
Others like to add more vegetables to their dishes. Sautéed onions and bell peppers are quite popular additions. I’ve also seen people add broccoli and black beans. deep-fried tofu. It’s not really good for you, but wow, it’s delicious! Especially in the Chinese food scene, I occasionally buy General Tso’s Tofu from Chinese restaurants and I love the deep fried tofu with sauce, rice and broccoli. As I do. It’s a great source of vegan protein and it can be seasoned in many different ways. Don’t give up if you don’t love the first way you try it!
