Action one

When he sits down to watch TV after his Christmas delivery and realizes that the soccer sport he tried on TiVo has been recorded, Santa decides to announce Buddy’s Christmas story, the Elf. The light of Buddy, an oversized elf, is excitedly preparing for another day of work in Santa’s workshop (“Happy All Time”). At work, Charlie, the store manager, informs the Elves that they have to work twice as much this 12 months as more and more people don’t consider Santa Claus, and the Christmas spirit is what keeps them going. Santa’s sleigh flies up. Afterwards, Charlie checks on Buddy’s progress in making toys. Traditionally, he goes behind the others and feels horrible about it. Charlie asks him to rest and, when he does, Buddy overhears a dialogue in which Charlie reveals that Buddy is definitely a human – Buddy’s worst nightmare. Santa sat Buddy down and told him the story of how he accidentally introduced him again to the North Pole when Buddy’s mother passed away. He told Buddy that his father lived and worked in the New York Metropolis but was on the “naughty list”. Deciding to save his father in the spirit of Christmas, Buddy sets out for New York (“World’s Greatest Father”). Upon arriving at his father’s workplace, Walter, in Empire State Construct, Buddy finds him talking to his spouse. and his son about Christmas being a total annoyance (“On the Road”). Walter is shocked to hear Buddy declare that he is his son and calls safety to come take him away. They dropped him off at Macy’s, where a supervisor mistook him for a worker, sent down from the company’s workplace to verify the problems. As they spruce up the store, all the workers praise their over-joyed new co-worker until they too catch Buddy’s infectious Christmas spirit (“Sparklejollytwinklejingley”). When everyone goes out for the night, Buddy asks Jovie, his favorite co-worker, on a date. She accepts. The next morning, Santa Claus of a reseller arrives. Buddy accuses him of being a pretender, and so they fight. The police found out and took Buddy to his father’s apartment. Meanwhile, Walter continued to work and was simply given a manuscript for a boy’s story that could save his job. Buddy bursts in to inform Walter that he is in love and while Walter talks to his colleagues, Buddy decides to make “snow” by placing the manuscript in a shredder. With the manuscript destroyed, an angry Walter explodes and tells Buddy to get out of his apartment and his life (“World’s Greatest Father – Reprise”).

Act two

Santa from the very beginning of the play rushes out of the pause to begin the story of Buddy, the Elf, shortly after again. He then wandered around NYC until he ended up at a Chinese restaurant with several different “Santa Claus” and “Goblin” on Christmas Eve. They complain about the state of Christmas and children today (“Nobody cares about Santa”). After they depart to return to their home, Buddy remembers that he was supposed to go on a date with Jovie another day. Elsewhere, she waits at the entrance of the Tavern inexperienced, upset that Buddy is 2 hours late (“Never Fall in Love”). Buddy arrives, apologizes, and gives Jovie the snow globe that Santa Claus gave him when he left the North Pole. However, Jovie is very upset, leaves. Emily tells Michael that, even though she loves him, Buddy still doesn’t believe in Santa at the age of thirty. Simply then, Santa’s sleigh flew across the sky and made each of them a new believer (“There’s a Santa”). They rush to Walter’s workplace to inform him, only to discover he is trying desperately to give you thoughts on a brand new young man’s e-book sooner than when his boss Come to listen to the presentation. The boss, Greenway, arrives and, as Walter begins his gruesome pitch, Buddy walks in. As a gift to Walter, Buddy provided Greenway with the story of Buddy the Elf (“The Story of Buddy the Elf”). Greenway likes it, however he needs to change the elf into a horse… and he needs Walter to work on it all before Christmas Eve and the next day. Walter gives up, ultimately determined to spend time with his family, when Greenway makes landfall. When Michael tells Buddy that they’ve noticed Santa’s sledding grounds, Buddy realizes that the sleigh has run out of Christmas spirit allowing it to run. They rush to help, finding Santa sitting numbly next to his sleigh (“Nobody cares about Santa – Reprise”). Buddy spots a group of digital camera information nearby and picks up the microphone to beg all of New York to look, sing, and show the Christmas spirit so Santa can fly once more. Jovie arrives and is pleased, as various random New Yorkers are part of the motion (“A Christmas Song – Reprise”) and Santa’s sleigh takes off once more. Santa Claus invites Buddy to return to the North Pole with him, however Buddy decides to stay, eventually feeling like he belongs.
