Questions to askAlways call before you go pick up to verify hours. (We can’t stress this enough, especially given the capacity limit!) Ask if the fields have already been picked or if there are still some blueberries left to pick. The length of the season is greatly influenced by the weather, especially for berries. In the past, when we went blueberry picking, we used small metal buckets or coffee cans with soft strings tied around each side. Many people prefer cash or checks, while others just want a credit card. I also recommend asking when the fields are spread. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to pick right after they sprayed that morning or even if they sprayed the day before and it hasn’t rained yet. It’s more fun to pick if you can sample along the way! What to Bring Read More: Use this Terraria saver editor to easily get the best items I recommend wearing a hat when picking. Sometimes you can stand in the shade of blueberry bushes, but shade is not always available in the field. If you’re bringing a baby, I recommend wearing a large bucket hat or propping up an umbrella blanket in the middle of the row and making sure your little one is in the shade. Fields may be further away from parking areas and some orchards are eliminating trailer rides this year to reduce patrons’ exposure. Bring a mask at check-in and check-out, wear light clothing, and bring sunscreen and insect repellent. After it rains, the mosquitoes still linger from time to time. Wear gym shoes with socks, or better yet, boots. You’ll get dirty, but that’s half the fun, right? Drink it often! You don’t realize all that is crouching and the sun will catch you! Bring a picnic lunch or at least a snack and a blanket to eat. Also bring towels and hand sanitizer, and don’t wear nice clothes or shoes. Especially with children, you almost always get blueberry juice on your clothes… this is really hard to get out! Bring a change of clothes on the way home for the kids and possibly the adults as well. The part around the stem turns the final color, so don’t choose berries that are only green at the bottom. If the berry is slightly red around the stem, it is a good fruit, just a little sour. you pick (much faster) There are often large berries in the middle of the bush or on the bottom, perfect for your little ones! When You Get Home Don’t wash blueberries until you’re ready to eat them. Washing will make the blueberries more susceptible to spoilage. Just pour them into a ziplock bag and place in the freezer. Blueberries can be kept in the freezer for months! We have so many more outdoor activities to do with your family this summer! Did we forget one of your favorite blueberry farms?
