One of the in-game items, Fabrics, is used not only for clothing but for many other crafting recipes including a poker table and nicer furniture. We’re going to share a few ways to earn fabric in Rimworld to help you earn a small stockpile, in short, to earn fabric in Rimworld, you’ll have to do one of three things; grow cotton, trade cloth with other factions or destroy fabric items to get some materials back. There are 3 different methods of obtaining cloth in Rimworld. (You can click on each method to automatically scroll to the method on this page.
Method 1: Planting and harvesting cotton with cotton plants
This method is the simplest (almost guaranteed) way to earn fabric in Rimworld. That’s as long as you have the right growing season and the crops don’t die in the process. But we’ll talk about alternative methods later for getting around the growing seasons… To start growing your own cotton, start by clicking the architecture menu at the bottom of the screen and selecting Region. Inside the region menu, you should select Developing region. You can then place this area anywhere outside of the land area. A great trick to help your plants grow faster is to place growing zones on fertile soil. At the bottom right of the screen you can toggle ‘fertile overlay’ to quickly see which parts of the map have fertile soil. You can change this, by selecting the growth zone by clicking anywhere in it. With the planting area selected, go to the bottom of the screen and change the crop type to Cotton as shown in the image below. After performing these steps, all you have to do is wait. If you notice that no colonists are growing your cotton crop, make sure you have at least one colonist assigned to plant the plant. Cottons will take a few in-game days to weeks to grow, so make sure you plant them very early in your playthrough.
Using hydroponics to get cotton plants
Through research, your colony may eventually unlock the ability to create hydroponic stations. These are growing areas that can be placed indoors and typically seasonal crops that can be grown year-round in them. Hydroponic stations also have the effect of promoting growth time but there are some caveats that hydroponic stations must always have power connected to them or else the plants will start to die. To grow, some plants will need a light source and a certain amount of heat, so you will have to run a solar lamp that consumes a lot of electricity. The correct temperature must also be maintained for the plants to grow, according to their requirements listed in their fact sheets.
Method 2: Trade with other factions for Fabrics
Cloth scramble trading with other factions is the easiest way to earn fabric. Simply start a caravan from the World menu and head to the other faction’s base to start trading. Not all bases have cloth for trading, so it can be a bit difficult to take your colonists on a journey that lasts several days. But if you pick one of the larger faction’s bases, chances are they’ll have fabric, as it’s a fairly common resource. Occasionally, a trading ship will fly over your colony and you will be able to trade resources with them. Almost every ‘Bulk Merchandise’ company I’ve flown over to the colony has a large stock of fabric to buy so keep an eye out!
Method 3: Break up unused furniture to get fabric

At some point, you may have used fabric to create a few bed sheets that you don’t really need, or maybe a poker table you don’t see any colonists using. You can break down these items that you created earlier and take advantage of some of the resources you used to build them, including fabric! Just select the structure or item and choose Deconstruction at the bottom to queue jobs for your builder. (You can also use the ‘x’ hotkey by default). Note that you won’t be able to get back all the fabric that was used to create the object. Clothes can’t be destroyed to get materials back, you can also use this method if you’re raiding an outpost or a band of bandits. If you find them with a room filled with linens or fabric beds, you can deal with these and bring the fabric back to your colony.

Fabric is used for so many things in Rimworld that you will absolutely find yourself needing it at some point. As mentioned above, it is a requirement to build Pool table and poker table, some of the more luxurious entertainment items. You can also use fabric to create all sorts of different clothes. While it doesn’t offer the best protection from the elements or enemies, it is a great bulk item to equip your entire colony. Fabrics are also used as carpets in Rimworld.
