Before starting to research the real-life locations for the Hunger Games trilogy, I believe most of the footage was shot in the studio. Not true: from North Carolina to Hawaii to Paris, you can follow in the footsteps of Katniss Everdeen (played perfectly by Jennifer Lawrence). My mistake shows what this sleek-looking sci-fi movie can look like – but really, many of the shooting locations are easy to visit for fans. Well, I wish you a good time hunting Hunger Games – and maybe the odds will work in your favor… Read: where the fire was filmed NOTE: This post is SPOILER-HARD. You have been warned…
Real-life filming locations for ‘The Hunger Games’ (2012)
Shot entirely in North Carolina, the first Hunger Games movie brought Panem, the Capitol, its Districts and Games Arena to life in NC’s many urban and rural settings. Truly fitting, as author Suzanne Collins notes, Katniss’ home in District 12 – the “smallest, poorest county” – is located in what was once Appalachian.
Abandoned textile town Henry River Mill Village has become a District 12 polling spot. The homes in the 72-acre village have been empty since the community left after the manufacturing industry collapsed. dumped in the mid-80s. It’s private property, but you can drive across Henry River Road (leaving Interstate 40 via Exit 119, named the Henry River exit). The mark was left behind from the manufacturing process, with Peeta’s bakery still showing signs of it.📷 The large Ivy area of Atlas ObscuraNorth Carolina, known locally as the Coleman Boundary, is duplicated into the woods of District 12, where Gale and Katniss hunt. It is part of the Pisgah National Forest, near Barnardsville on Route 197/North Forks Road, northeast of Asheville. Additionally, the Corner Rock area next to the creek is used later in the story as the outer surroundings for the Arena cave that Katniss and Peeta are hiding in (the interior is modeled on the sound stage). To find the correct settings, follow the detailed instructions here.📷 @seanstratton: The private warehouses in Shelby are home to District 12’s barter market, the Hob, and the site of the Reaping ceremony, where Katniss and Peeta were chosen as Towns in their area. The row of commercial buildings along the railroad tracks on Shelby’s South Morgan Street at Blanton Street has become the industrial area of 12. All of these are private property, but you can look at them from the street. outside.
Katniss and Peeta are drawn to the glittering Capitol, where scenes of the Tributes training center were filmed inside the abandoned Philip Morris Cabarrus Plant in Concord. In Charlotte, the Convention Center became the setting for the entrance to the Tributes’ fiery chariot, with interviews with Caesar Flickerman taking place at the Knights Theater in downtown Charlotte.@claybanks
Katniss, Peeta and the other 22 Tributes kick off the Games in Cornucopia – these gory scenes were filmed at the North Fork Reservoir on Black Mountain (20 miles northeast of Asheville). Access is restricted to the public, but you can see the water by following the Craggy Pinnacle Trail from the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center.Read more: Quick Answer: Where are Bookmarks Stored on Android? | Top Q&A📷 @derilyctDuPont State Forest was used for more Arena scenes. Head to Triple Falls to see where Katniss found wounded Peeta disguised in the rocks, and to Bridal Veil Falls to find the pool Katniss jumped into to escape a firestorm. Real-life filming locations for ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ (2013)
Moving from North Carolina, locations for Catching Fire were scouted in Atlanta and, more interestingly, the island of Oahu in Hawaii (sorry, Atlanta).
Once again the action begins in District 12, where Katniss and Gale hunt in the woods outside the fence – this time the State Forest on Mount Ramapo in New Jersey near the New York State border was used. Back at the County confines, The Hob’s setting is now an abandoned industrial space, Pratt-Pullman Yard near East Atlanta. The structure is not open to the public, but its crumbling walls can be clearly seen through the chain link fence.@_arween_
After being forced into a disastrous victory tour by President Snow, the fake engaged Katniss and Peeta attend a Capitol party at Snow’s mansion – which is actually the Swan House in Buckhead, Atlanta, a house Large family home from the 1920s built by a cotton baron. The Morning Room here has become Snow’s office and is open to visitors to visit the house. Following Snow’s plot, Katniss and Peeta were drafted for the game Quell Quarter in District 12’s Justice Building. The shabby and chic setting suitable for this film is the Goat Farm Center for the Arts, a neighborhood complex of 19th-century industrial buildings now used as a studio and performance space in Atlanta. Marriott Marquis Hotel – a glass elevator in the atrium was used for the scene when colleague Tribute Johanna stepped out in front of Katniss and Peeta.@ jtkyber1
The arena scenes of the appearance of the Tributes at Cornucopia take place at ‘The Beach’ in Clayton County International Park (built for Beach Volleyball during the ’96 Olympics), with subsequent scenes of Cornucopia being completed at Kawela Bay in Oahu, Hawaii, on the five-star Turtle Bay Resort (where the cast and crew stay – plus, actual fans, that’s where the Forgetting Sarah Marshall rom-com set up. ) 📷 @sonniehiles Arena’s arduous jungles were filmed in the North Shore’s Waimea Valley. Although many of the outlying sites are not accessible to the public, you can follow the trails from the valley’s visitor center to the east of Haleiwa to explore a recreated old village and swim at Waimea Falls (you won’t encounter killer monkeys, poison mist, or jabberjays along the way unless you’re extremely unlucky). Real-life filming locations for ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and 2’ (2014/15)
In keeping with the larger scope of the story (depicting the all-out war in Panem), filming for the final film moved to Europe, with action sequences being filmed at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport. and an old-fashioned housing estate in the Paris suburb of Noisy le Grand. Both sites are easily accessible and open to the public.
Mockingjay – Season 1 shows a major battle in District 2 at its climax, where Katniss and Gale lead the 13th District rebels to victory over the Capitol’s bombers. The concrete buildings and abandoned terminals of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport were used for the set – and anyone can visit, as the 909-acre space was closed in 2008 and opened. reopened as a public park in 2010. You’ll certainly find more pleasing scenes, however, than the twisted wreckage shown on film, as the real-life Tempelhof is used for kitesurfing, Urban gardening and music festival. Alternatively, you can take tours of the old station – great if you love a little urban exploration.@pimmenkveld
In Mockingjay – Part Two, Katniss and Peeta are unwittingly caught up in urban warfare with the task of filming a rebel propaganda video in the Capitol. In a simulation of the established Arena, they battle through deadly traps and avoid monsters on the streets in the real-life urban setting of Noisy le Grand. What prompted the producers to choose this suburb ten miles east of central Paris to portray the futuristic world city? Architect Richard Bofill has the 1970s sci-fi look Espaces d’Abraxas is your answer, where key scenes were filmed. This housing complex was also used as the setting for Terry Gilliam’s Brazilian satire 30 years ago.📷 Stephane Martin Have you visited any Hunger Games filming locations?
