The String of Pearls is one of my all-time favorites. I just love their smooth, round green leaves. I love the way they look as they grow and run along the wall of the pot. Just as I thought I had found them, disaster struck me and by the time I realized it, it was too late. 8 common problems when growing a String of Pearls can be easily avoided, I list them below.

The pot is too big
Make sure the pot is not too big for the plant. If the pot is too large, the plant can stay wet for too long and eventually rot. Jade plants have very narrow stems, unlike other succulents, which can make them susceptible to rot.
The plant is planted too deep in the pot
String Jade plants do not have deep roots and do not need a lot of soil. Too much soil can cause root rot because they stay wet for too long and take longer to dry. Also, if planted too deep in the pot (more than an inch), plants that aren’t fully ventilated can promote fungal growth and rotting.
This is the problem with my factory. While I liked the look of the pot, I realized it wasn’t the best choice for a String of Pearls. The pot is too deep and the rim is too thick. These are all bad choices for this plant and inevitably, the tree starts to suffer.
Excessive watering
String of Pearls, unlike other succulents, have very slender bodies. They do not store much water in the trunk. They store water in small round leaves. When over-watered, these leaves can absorb too much water until they literally burst. Drink as much and as much as you can, aiming for the base of the plant, not the top. Avoid misting the plant. Where I live, the climate is very dry. I should water the String of Pearls once a week during the hot summer months, or even more often during intense heat waves. I cut back on watering to about once every 10-14 days when it’s cooler. In winter, when it rains more, I mainly rely on rainwater because I leave the plants outside. If it doesn’t rain much then I water about every 2 weeks in winter.
You need to find out your watering needs based on the climate where you live. Most of the time, people have a harder time overriding String of Pearls than overriding. There are tools like hygrometers and hygrometers to check soil moisture and moisture in the air.
Sprinklers
You will easily spot a string of pearls that are still intact. The leaves will shrivel and wither. In general, it is easier to fix the shortage problem than the overwrite problem. You may need to increase watering if your String of Pearls has shriveled up. For example, if you are once a month and notice that the leaves are starting to shrink, increase watering to every two weeks and see what happens.

Jade plants need well-drained soil. If the soil remains wet for too long, this will promote root rot. The jade plant has very thin roots and stems that are prone to rot. Make sure you are using the right soil. I like to use commercial cacti and succulent potting mixes, which I combine with perlite for extra drainage. Too much sun
String of Pearls prefers bright but filtered light. They do not do well in strong sunlight or full sun. Make sure your String of Pearls is protected from the heat of the sun, especially the afternoon sun. Provide protection or shade to prevent sunburn or sun damage.
The sun is not enough
Although they do not like full sun, they need bright light to thrive. If kept indoors, it should be placed in a bright place, near a window but protected from direct sunlight. If you find your plant is struggling indoors, it may not be getting enough light. Too little light + too much water is the cause of disaster. Depending on your location, you may not be getting enough light. Or maybe shorter and shorter. In these cases, consider investing in a planting rig to help the plants thrive.
Insects or Bugs
Mealybugs and mealybugs love carnivorous plants, Pearl Chain is no exception. If you spray white powder on your plants, it could be mealybugs. These insects secrete honey or sugary substances, which can promote mold growth and make plants more susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections. You can usually spot them on the leaves or undersides of leaves and between the joints of plants. Aphids are small, fat, teardrop-shaped insects. They can be found sucking on leaves or flowers at the end of the stem. They excrete sugary white matter or bile mushrooms when they eat. This sugary substance can encourage the growth of black mold. If you see a lot of ants, busy working on or around your plant, take a closer look and you will see that you have other problems going on. How to save your pearl chain
If the problem is one of the common problems mentioned above, take action immediately and correct the mistake before the tree does. If you find your tree has dead roots, there’s still something you can do to save your tree.

These are the cuttings that I have recovered. Unlike other succulents, Chain of Pearls have very thin stems so the cuttings do not need to be dried before repotting. If you want to be on the safe side, you can wait a few hours or a day before repotting.

You don’t have to remember which end goes into the soil, it doesn’t matter because it will grow roots from where it comes into contact with the soil, you can stick the stem directly into the soil like this.
Or you can place them on the ground horizontally like this. This is my preferred method as I like to start with a full top and I don’t mind waiting for the plant to grow and eventually die. If you want your trace to be immediate then stick one end in the ground and let the other end hang.
Hopefully this doesn’t happen to you and you don’t have to save your String of Gems. But if it happens, don’t lose heart because it could be for something good. I repot the cuttings that I have saved into several of these containers and in different pots.
