DeJ Loaf

Detroit rapper DeJ Loaf has brought the powerful tunes and smoothness of R&B to many viral hits, starting in the mid-2010s. Her bulletproof lyrical presence has captured the attention of many star, won a signing deal from Drake for the breakout single “Try Me” in 2014 and a featured verse on the Eminem-led Detroit all-star song “Detroit vs. Everybody” in 2015. DeJ Loaf regularly appears on other artists’ tracks and mainly releases her music as short EPs and mixtape like Sell Sole II of 2020. DeJ Loaf was born Deja Trimble in 1991. She grew up on the east side of Detroit and began writing lyrics as a child. In high school, after taking a break from basketball in junior high, she became more seriously interested in music. At some point, she adopted her stage name, with DeJ pronounced similarly to “beige” and Loaf alluding to her preference for shoes. Over a period that included a couple of semesters at Saginaw Valley State and a job as a cleaner at the Chrysler plant, she continued to develop her talents but did not gain much traction. In July 2014, two years after she released her first mixtape, she uploaded “Try Me”, a soft, low-pitched track produced by native DDS Ypsilanti, which drew attention noticed by Drake, who referenced it on Instagram. The platinum-selling star’s admission increased DeJ’s profile exponentially and spawned a wave of unauthorized versions from fellow rappers. (She approved a version featuring a verse by Wiz Khalifa.)
