Above you is Utah’s largest ski area – including 4,000 acres of groomed trails, tree runs and open powder fields. And if you’re lucky enough to encounter the right conditions, it’ll get wet in some of the lightest, driest snow you’ll ever ski. You can’t wait to get started. But where will you go? Thing is, the Canyons are not your average getaway. It’s a place that’s deep, wide, and angular – as complex and facet as a crumpled piece of cardboard. The Canyons Trail Map does a great job of flattening it all out on a single sheet of paper: but it doesn’t give up all of its secrets in a flash. So before you get started, here are some important rules of thumb.

1. First things first: eat some proper food at Murdock’s

Photo: Welove2ski.com You have a big day ahead. So don’t try to cross all that terrain on a piece of toast. You’ll need some food to match: courtesy of breakfast bagels at Murdock’s. It’s a sledgehammer with eggs, cheese, and ham, and it’ll set you back $8. Polish one of these puppies and you won’t hear your stomach growl until 1pm.

2. Next: go straight through the gondola to the Orange Bubble Express

This is America’s first and only heated chair ladder – and very welcome on a chilly mid-winter morning. But that’s not the point here. The bottom line is – in just one ride – it gets you to a point that makes it easy to get to both sides of the ski area.

3. Then head south, to the empty trails…

So even on a normal weekend day, the only busy(ish) area is the center strip that runs underneath the Saddleback and Tombstone Express seats. Ski past them, towards the left edge of the Canyons trail map, and you’ll find some beautiful ski slopes. Even by American standards, there’s a variety of unusual terrain here: easy blu music, steep tree tracks, powder piles, and lots of bumps. Oh yes, and the quirky house. This part of the resort is home to The Colony – one of the most upscale residential developments you’ll find in any ski resort, on either side of the Atlantic Ocean. Many properties here are larger than Alpine hotels. Skiing hard: because that way you’ll get cravings for one of Cloud Dine’s pizzas. Freshly baked pizza at 9,270ft? YES, PLEASE.

Photo: © Welove2ski.com There’s another option at the top of the Orange Bubble Express: turn right and you could be stuck in the long, steep valleys at the right edge of the Canyons trail map. Here you’ll find four of the resort’s best grocery customers: Echo, Eclipse, Apex Ridge, and Boa, and as you head north, you’ll find each emptier than the last. . It’s crazy: these are long and classy sales. Why don’t so many people ski? However, it’s not all about velvet; because sharply reduced from the bezels are some sparkling black and dual black diamond runs. I say “scintillation”: they will if you have strong legs and a strong nerve. But if you don’t get to the steep and sustainable fields, you might just have a nervous breakdown.

4. And don’t forget, in a spur of the moment, there are challenges all over the mountain – not just at the top.

However, it should be remembered that this terrain is often the last to open up – because it needs to be secured against avalanches. So when the first storm hits, local skiers often stay lower, among the trees – like at the Paradise Bowl under the Tombstone Express forklift, or on the slopes below the restaurant Cloud Dine. You should join them. Canyons is a 35-minute drive from Salt Lake City airport – and you can book rooms directly from the resort here. UK skiers can also purchase tailor-made accommodation and flight packages from tour operators like Ski Independence.
