Bridge to Terabithia is a children’s film based on the book by Katherine Paterson. She wrote the book for her son, David Paterson, after the death of his best friend when he was 8 years old. The film tells the story of 11-year-old boy Jesse Oliver Aarons, Jr (Josh Hutcherson) and Leslie Burke, (AnnaSophia Robb), who move in next door and change Jesse’s world forever. Both kids are bullied at school, Jesse because of his poverty and his love of drawing, and Leslie because she flatly refuses to conform to the ideals of the other students in the class. Jesse and Leslie create their own fantasy world in a desolate forest near their home. Together they fight evil and open their minds to an amazing world that exists only in their imaginations. For example, Janice Avery (Lauren Clinton), the school bully who torments younger children and often makes the lives of small and frail children miserable, is later revealed to have a her father beat her. None of the characters are truly terrible people, even those portrayed as villains, which makes it easier for viewers to associate them with. In addition, Jesse’s father (Robert Patrick) is depicted as a grumpy, short-tempered person who has no time for Jesse and his sisters. We also see this when he shows a preference for Jesse’s sister Maybelle (Bailee Madison) over Jesse, and when he berates him for losing his key (though we later discover that Maybelle took them). At the end of the film, however, he proves himself to be more of a caretaker than he appears to be, helping Jesse get through a tough time. d ExpectBridge to Terabithia was primarily filmed in Auckland, New Zealand. The main setting is grasslands and woods, with a few brief scenes where Jesse and Leslie imagine their ‘kingdom’ Terabithia. Leslie tells Jesse to ‘open your mind and close your eyes’. When he opened his eyes, we saw a vast valley with waterfalls, mountains and a castle. This encourages the audience to see Terabithia through the eyes of Jesse and Leslie. The stunning panoramic shots here are one of the highlights of the film, as is the soundtrack that is very effective. Several times the film has Jesse and Leslie’s class singing along to songs like ‘Why can’t we be friends?’ and ‘Someday’. Jesse is encouraged by his music teacher, Edmonds (Zooey Deschanel), in his drawing. That’s what Leslie taught Jesse when she created Terabithia, and it’s aided by Jesse’s dramatic transformation throughout the film. He becomes less shy and more likely to stand up for himself against bullies. Overall, I would give Bridge to Terabithia a 4/5 rating and would recommend it to anyone over 8 years old.
