One of the first modifications I made to my 1972 Chevy C10 was the addition of front and rear roll pans. I really like the smooth and sleek look this gives my truck especially since I have lowered it by about 4 inches. My pans are made of 18-coil gauge steel that I welded in place and they have the correct shaft and curve to fit almost exactly between the fenders. They didn’t cause any problems using my back door or any other part of the truck. They can also be purchased in fiberglass, carbon and plastic bolted or riveted in place. You then have the option of filling in the seams with Bondo if you want a completely smooth look. I would get them $500 to $600 for decent- but not top-of-the-line quality and I really don’t like the way they look on a low-end truck. Most of them are unpainted to better match your car’s paint color. How easy is a roll pan to install?

With the advent of lightweight pans, we can now equip our trucks with a roll pan in less than an hour. This can be done with a simple list of tools and some fairly simple steps. Here is a list of the tools you need.

  • Paint
  • screw
  • Wrench
  • Roll pan
  • Countersink
  • Bandage
  • Flashlight
  • Electric drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Here are some simple steps to follow:

  • First, remove your license plate and remove your rear door.
  • Disconnect the taillight wires from the connections.
  • Remove the rear bumper.
  • Install the roll pan by positioning one of the pan’s lower end tabs into the truck bed’s rear quarter panel. While holding the pan in place, slowly tilt the other edge of the pan until you can fit the other bottom tab into the bed’s rear quarter panel. Carefully move the pan upwards, until its top edge aligns directly under the truck floor.
  • Align the roll pan properly by adjusting the pan up and down and side to side. Use duct tape to hold the pan temporarily in place. Reinstall the tailgate and make sure it works smoothly.
  • Secure the roll pan in place. Using a power drill, insert the screws into the pre-drilled holes in the top of the pan. With the drill bit, make a small hole through the bottom glass of the back of the truck and through the flange of the pan. Slide the screws into place and tighten them to secure the pan in place.
  • Paint as desired.
  • Reset back door and license plate and bracket.

    Epilogue

Personally, I really like the look of the lowered truck roll bins, but not so much on trucks that keep their neck height. Everyone has their own preferences and that is what makes this hobby so interesting. My pan is soldered in so if I sink it will probably do a lot of damage. I don’t put many kilometers on my truck so I’m not too worried about that.
