You’re the one who put a drink in my hand when I made myself sick with anxiety, and then forced me to take ibuprofen when I was so hungover I couldn’t even lift my butt out of bed. You are the one who sent me Bible verses when my faith was shaken, and always remember to text me, just to check. fell, was the one who picked up the phone on the first ring, and let me vent my fatigue for the thousandth time. You are the one who wrote me letters in your perfect, perfect handwriting, reminding me of the love I deserve. You were the one who faced me in the bathroom when I was about to go on a date, looked me in the eye and told me I was wasting my time with the wrong person. Encourage me when I’m down, celebrate with me when I get up, lift me up when I don’t believe in myself.You were there every step of the way—my first love, a big kid’s first job, last day of college, every crazy fight with my parents, first real apartment, first heartbreak. You’ve been there in meaningless days, just sitting by the pool in the summer, talking about class and drama and family and boys. You were there the day I got my degree, my twenty-first birthday, the day I moved across the country to start a new life.
You yourself taught me that time and distance have no power over a real connection. It was you who showed me that true love doesn’t leave, doesn’t run away, doesn’t fade when the road turns.
It was you who showed me who I am and who I have potential to be time and time again when I was too distracted by fear, sweets and empty promises to realize that I had failed. wander away from you, away from yourself. I believe that my worth depends on who loves me, and so I’m sure who I am is only measured by my role as a girlfriend. your arms around my shoulders and your kiss on my cheek, you taught me that I’m valued at heart – not in a romantic sense, but how big my heart is, my ability to love. With your kind words and laughter, you have shown me that there is so much more to me, with life, than love.
And you taught me what love is – unconditionally, regardless of circumstances or someone whispering sweet things to me in the middle of the night. There are no expiration dates or specific rules. Not for what I can give, but for who I am.
It was you who showed me that love stays, love fights, love is by my side, walking with me every step of the way. You, who showed me that love doesn’t change with the seasons or the ups and downs of life. You who reminded me that I am amazing and valuable, important and worthy.
