President’s Message – Blind Ambition
Message from the President – Blind ambition
What does “blind ambition” mean? topqa.info defines ambition as a person’s desire to achieve a particular result. It means you will try until you can’t try anymore. Ambition is a very good trait to have! Blind ambition is when ambition prevents people from seeing what is happening around them. Sometimes blind ambition is also a wonderful trait. Sometimes we need to stop what’s happening around us to do the seemingly impossible. Most of the blind are dependent on their families and government. Indeed, our society has an obligation to take care of those who cannot really support themselves. At Wiscraft, however, our blind ambition challenges that very premise… that they can’t take care of themselves. We seek to give blind people a chance to prove that they can be as productive as anyone. We give them the hope of a job and with it the pride of being able to feed themselves and their families. We keep trying and trying until we can’t go any further so as not to blindly see an obstacle. Sometimes we need to stop what is happening around us. For example, most people believe that blind people cannot work as efficiently as people with myopia. There is 70% unemployment rate of people who are blind. It was a national embarrassment and the result of a false belief; that a blind person cannot do certain things at work. This belief could not be more false. Our employees have proven time and time again that they are capable, effective, and often more, as visionary colleagues. We just need to give them the tools, the training, and the means to get over the obstacle that is the obstacle. This program, which aims to create jobs for the blind and disabled, requires us to keep at least 75% of our direct workforce blind. At Wiscraft we pride ourselves on overdoing this and now have a blind direct labor rate of 86%. How can we do that? First of all, we never accepted that we couldn’t develop a better and better “blind-friendly” process. We sometimes apply technology such as voiceover computer software, talking gauges, talking CNC machines (Computer Numerical Control) and tailor-made fixtures. Usually, that just requires us to apply continuous improvement suggestions from our employees. Our staff shows up every day and does their best. They try harder and care more about the work and the work they are doing. Most importantly, they don’t listen to the whispers of people who say they can’t be as productive as others. I am so proud to be able to lead this beautiful group of people. They have spirit and courage. They never said never. Now that’s what I call blind ambition.
