L&P: What is it? | Top Q&A

A question I hear at least once a day from the tech world, is ‘What is an L&P’ or ‘What is liquid & powder? Understanding the terminology and chemistry behind the products we are working with is essential. ‘Acrylic’ is a two part liquid and powder system. The proper terms for liquids & powders we use as manicurists are monomers and polymers.

Acrylic is a special family of monomers and/or oligomers and polymers used to create nail enhancement products, including gel and L&P enhancers.

With liquid & powder, powder has been polymerized to a full extent while gel is a similar product where monomers and oligomers (chain of monomers) are in a semi-liquid/semi-solid state as it has not been polymerized. Think of gels as pre-mixed acrylic, the words ‘Acrylic’ and ‘Gel’ are easy to confuse as they are practically the same family. Gel describes the physical state of a product, but over the years it has become the generic name of a product category, much like acrylic for liquids & powders.

Liquids & Powders and gels describe the physical state of acrylic nail products.

New to the market are poly acrylic products (acrylic/gel); mixture between liquid & powder and gel. Acrygel uses tri-polymer technology, obtaining oligomers from gels and polymers from liquids and powders and glazing agents. Nail liquid is a monomer made mainly of ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and sometimes also includes other monomers and additives. Monomers are usually purple in color, contain UV Inhibitors and help prevent acrylic from yellowing.PolymersCommonly known as ‘Powder’. It is synthetic and consists of large molecules made up of a linked chain of repeating simple monomers.Copper polymersPolymers are made from two or more different types of monomers. Both liquid and powder start out as a liquid monomer.Liquid: Liquid prepared and synthesized from petroleum.Nail Gaga Polymer PowderFlour: During the manufacturing process, the monomer is placed in a large mixer where it is diluted with water. Since the monomer is hydrophobic (does not like water), it is insoluble and remains suspended as small particles. During rapid mixing, an initiator and a catalyst are added, causing the liquid monomer to convert to a polymer. Water is withdrawn, dry granules and additives such as pigments are added. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of the chemicals and terminology we as nail professionals work with every day.
