We live in the skin that binds us together but it’s so easy to scrape it off. It is easy to bruise, burn or leave a scar. But this is the beauty of living in a world where God takes on our bodies, asks us to do the best we can and blooms where we have planted. However, to be honest, learning to bloom where you have planted is very difficult. It feels like I’ve been buried 6 meters deep in the dark and I’m trying to figure out how to get to the surface. For two years, our lives were buried deep in the hard mud. When we talked about having another child, I was told I had cancer. Then I had to have a hysterectomy. A few months later, I had a brain infection. Before I was released, I had to learn to walk and talk. In the midst of my difficulties, my husband was facing heart failure, he had to have different heart transplants. There were also two different times when he had to resuscitate. These life-or-death moments bring me to my knees, and I wonder what God is doing. At one point, a doctor helped me get off the floor of the emergency room and told me it was time to learn how to bloom where I had grown. You don’t know my life. You don’t know what we’ve been through. How can you tell this to me? This lovely colloquial message is to encourage people to see the better side and reach for it while you’re going through tough times. I’m sure someone has said this to you at some point. It doesn’t feel good, but they make sense. But is it even the Bible? Is it even useful?

Is “Flower Where You Are Planted” in the Bible?

The Bible does not contain this exact phrase and the earliest reference to it is the Bishop of Geneva, Saint Francis de Sales, who lived from 1567 to 1622. Life is hard. There are many unexpected moments and circumstances that can bring us to our knees and take our breath away. But, even on our knees, we can still bloom where we plant. But what does that mean in these times? According to God’s Word, we can bear fruit. John 15:1-3; 5 tells us an eloquent story about the vine and the vine. Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every unfruitful branch in me, while every branch that bears fruit, he prunes to make it bear more fruit… I am the vine; you are the affiliate. If you are in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; There’s nothing you can do except me. “When we surrender our lives to Christ, He prunes us. He allows us to ‘grow’ through it to be resilient. We will go through difficult times. We will feel as if our lives are buried in darkness. God allows this so that we may bloom where we are planted. We cannot choose the cards that life has dealt us, but we can learn to play them. In the hands of God, every circumstance prepares us for the next season of life. Perhaps the best definition of this phrase is: To bloom where we are planted means to grow, to develop, and to be pruned to grow in tough dirt to reflect the goodness of Christ!

But the beautiful part, he never let the thousand gold alone. Jesus is the same way — no matter how much the fire burns, He is with us through the process. Our job is to participate in this process, knowing we will thrive on the other side. 1 Peter 1:6-7, says: “In this you rejoiced, although for a short time you may have endured grief in all trials.
